  • No Profit, But Lots of Help  By : Nelson Pellew.
No one likes the word, "non-profit." It immediately conjures flaccid images of African refugee camps and half-watched, depressing, late-night infomercials. If you were trying to find a powerful, attractive word that could galvanize millions of people to give, non-profit is not that word. As a culture, we're too geared towards the power and lure of its antithesis, profit.
  • Practical Optimism - Painting For Hugs!  By : Fred Douglas
Paint For hugs - Nate Pepmeyer, a nineteen year old Pittsburgher started a charity last Nov that's an inspiration to several. Concerned about under-funded elementary schools having their funding cut for the arts, Nate started ipaintforhugs.org, a site where he sells his paintings, donating one hundred pc of his profits to form 10 grants of $1,000 for under-funded junior school arts programs in the year 2010. Amazingly, Nate has already made his first donation of a $1,000 grant from sales of his paintings. Now other Pittsburgh Artists , including up and coming artists Lauren Toohey and Elizabeth Pallack, are joining his website, offering 50% of their profits to his cause. With his latest inclusion in the Pittsburgh arts For Change association, his new "Guest Artists" section, his book sales, and Amazon referral programs to help him, Nate will most likely achieve his goal far ahead of schedule.

  • Give Without Remembering  By : Fred Douglas
It is not enough to believe. We have to learn how to put our beliefs to the test and act appropriately. These days, in the present economy, it appears like it's easy to slip into self-absorbed thinking. When things get tough we have a tendency to focus on ourselves and our families. This is natural, but it is critical that we continue to attempt to make a change in the lives of others. You don't have to spend a lot of time or money to contribute. In fact, only one or two seconds can make a change. Maybe we should all create plans to do something to change the world every day, or at the very least once each week. There are some great books available that may provide ideas, and you can come up with your own concepts about the way to help others with just a few dollars or 1 or 2 minutes. The trick is to focus on what you CAN do, not on what you CAN'T do. Can you drop by to check on an aged neighbor? Can you take a couple of minutes to clear a neighbor's sidewalk of snow? What about taking one or two napkins from home so you can pick up 2 pieces of rubbish to throw away on the way to work or college ( the tissues are so you do not get your hands dirty ) ? Can you manage a second and one or two additional calories of energy to grin at someone, hold the door for someone, or give someone a compliment? What about a tip and a'Thank you' for a service person? We may not be in a position to donate millions, but in these times it is more significant than ever to put the emphasis back on giving. It's simple to think about others when you're feeling like you have it all. The real mark of personality is how we concentrate on helping others when times are tough.

The development of a business model is ironically necessary for the successful non-profit. Without the proper guidance and attention to detail, a non-profit is not long in the tooth.
