Practical Optimism - Painting For Hugs!

By: Fred Douglas

Paint For hugs - Nate Pepmeyer, a 19 year old Pittsburgher commenced a charity last November that's an inspiration to several. Worried about under-funded elementary colleges having their funding cut for the humanities, Nate commenced ipaintforhugs.org, a site where he sells his paintings, giving one hundred percent of his profits to form ten grants of $1,000 for under-funded junior school humanities programs in the year 2010. Amazingly, Nate has made his first donation of a $1,000 grant from sales of his paintings. Now other Pittsburgh Artists , including emerging artists Lauren Toohey and Elizabeth Pallack, are joining his website, offering 50% of their profits to his cause. With his recent inclusion in the Pittsburgh humanities For Change association, his new "Guest Artists" section, his book sales, and Amazon referral programs to assist him, Nate will very likely achieve his goal far ahead of schedule.

The essence of charity has a rich custom in this town, from the beginning of commercial development to the present. The colleges, firms, and associations in the area place very high value on charity and community service. Actually, Duquesne University's students, faculty, and staff give over two hundred thousand hours a year to volunteer work. This type of commitment isn't rare among Pittsburghers, from millionaires to blue collar workers. Andrew Carnegie, of course, donated infinite millions to various causes throughout the country, as did the Mellons, Hillmans, Westinghouse, the Fricks, and many others. Today, foundations like the Heinz Endowment write $60,000,000 in grants yearly.

The Pittsburgh Foundation has donated $365 million greenbacks since 1945, making it the 14th biggest community foundation in the country. Naturally, the magnates and racecar enthusiasts are not the only ones who do their part around here. Pittsburgh hosts various bike rides, walks, runs, sales, and gatherings to raise money for charity, as well as beautification efforts. Sometimes, local enterprise owners create their own events. For instance, Wendy Betten of The Hot Metal diner in West Mifflin ( a place with some of the finest breakfast food in the world ) latterly organized a "Pay it Forward" day in West Mifflin. Volunteers came to help plant flowers and greet passersby with the "Pay it Forward" message - asking people to do good deeds, only demanding that those that they help will do the same for others. From the simplest to the most bold, Pittsburgh attempts to improve the world develop from year to year.
