Fraud Checks

By: Odesi Desko.

Getting a handle on check cashing fraud has been something that authorities have had trouble doing, as this crime has reached epidemic proportions. A deceitful person, with access to the state-of-the-art copy machines of today, can easily produce a copycat check and then proceed to make multiple copies that seem quite genuine. This problem manifests itself primarily on ad websites, in at-home businesses, and when contact is made internationally through the internet.

It's not that hard to identify check chasing fraud; for the most part, a con artist will just ask someone to deposit a check for them in their own banking account so that they can forward something through Western Union and get money that way. You'll often see this disguised as an item for sale or a job that you perform from home.

Generally, until the check is deposited and the bank dishonors it as counterfeit there is no way to know it is fraudulent and by then the person is usually long gone. Due to the hold on inter-state and international funds, several checks can be deposited and cash withdrawn to be forwarded to the sender before one finds that they have been duped.

Getting the right information from those they want to defraud has become an art form to the scam artist. Using a money transfer site requires you to enter personal information which can be captured and used for the purposes of making all kinds of counterfeit checks and identification for the purposes of emptying the victim's account.

As mentioned one of the most common bilks today is for the working at home ads. Many times people are asked to deposit company checks for companies working internationally, take out 10% for their share, and return the rest. One is even called WalMart, INC., but is not associated with the Walmart stores most have come to know. A few other popular channels for contact include Careerbuilder.com, Gadgets Ltd., as well as Craiglist so trust nothing unless it has been checked out thoroughly.

Check fraud is used all too often today online. There are many instances of people being contacted with the promise of money that they've either won or inherited, which is part of the scam. They then receive a cashier's check or money order that's supposed to be more than their allotted amount of money. The scammer asks them to deposit the check, take their share, and use wire transfer to return the rest.

The con artist's objective in a check cashing scam, is to gain vital information from a bank, that will allow them to access the bank account and withdraw all funds, while simultaneously convincing their innocent target to accept counterfeit checks in exchange for cash. You can protect yourself from check cashing fraud by being able to identify people calling you through the use of telephone look up services such as ip-who.com/15/index.py, so that you can know who is behind that call or check.

For those who feel they are caught in an international check cashing scam, there is a unit called the World Law Direct, but they are very slow to process cases which may take many years. Additionally, in the end it is unlikely any funds will be recovered.
