David Beckham, Soccer Legend

By: Robert Smith

On May 2, 1975 a legend was born. That is the day David Robert Joseph Beckham, an Englishman now playing for Real Madrid and the English National Soccer team, entered the world. His illustrious career started when he was just seventeen.

Born in London, England. A kitchen fitter and hairdresser David Edward Alan Ted Beckham is his father. Although David Beckham's grandfather was Jewish and David has said he had a large impact on his life, he himself does not follow any faith. As he grew up he was a massive fan of Manchester United, likely because his father was.

This love of the game was passed down to his son. Winning the FC Barcelona talent search competition brought Beckham's amazing talent to light. He also played on a team coached by his dad, the Ridgeway Rovers. His first official club was the Tottenham Hotspur. His soccer training included Manchest United's Youth Training, as well as Brandenton Prepatory Academy.

In 1992, he played for the Manchester United's team as a substitute. After that, he signed his very first professional contract. Beckham became a household name when he scored a marvelous goal in August 1996, against Wimbledon. His debut in World Cup was on September 1, 1996 in the England vs. Moldova match. PPA Young voted him as the Player of the Year in that year. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he played all the matches and in the finals his team played with France. Due to his bad performance in it, the media and supporters, who blamed him for England's elimination, accused him. He even received death threats and the whole incident was the story line of his Adidas advertisement.

He sprung back in the 1998-99 season. As part of the United team, Beckham helped England secure a win in both the FA Cup and Champions leagues. Even with his successes, there were those that still remembered his less-than-stellar World Cup performance. Not discouraged, he went on to be a driving force in soccer today. And when he lead his United team to victory, all was forgiven. So much so that, in 1999, he was named FIFA World Player of the year as well as European Footballer of the Year. Things changed, however, with England's elimination in Euro 2000. Once again, David Beckham was the target of criticism and blame.
